Brian Druker, M.D., is chief executive officer of the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU. For decades, he has revolutionized the treatment of cancer through research that resulted in the first drug to target the molecular defect of a cancer while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Marketed under the name Gleevec®, his discovery turned a once-fatal cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia, into a manageable condition.
Gleevec was featured on the cover of Time magazine and established Druker as a pioneer in precision medicine. Most importantly, his discovery became a new proof of principle for targeted therapies, spurring the development of more than 50 similar precision therapies for other cancers. Druker has received numerous prestigious awards from institutions.
He has since applied precision medicine to early cancer detection, aiming to improve survival rates. Through a previous $1 billion in fundraising support and an additional $2 billion commitment by Phil and Penny Knight in 2025, the Knight Cancer Institute is driving innovations in prevention, treatment and cures for future generations.
