OHSU surgeons develop new guidelines for prescribing narcotics in order to help limit the risk of opioid dependence. Brett Sheppard, M.D., says, “before, we didn’t have any guidelines. We left it up to the physician to give patients pain medications and, by and large, the default thinking was ‘I’m going to give people more than they might need, because it might be the weekend and they can’t get a hold of me and I don’t want to make their life difficult.’ That thinking has gone away.”
